What colors look best with African-American skin?

I have a formal dance coming up in May, and I originally wanted to go for a little black dress, but it didn't seem very springy. So I'm a little lost on what colors to consider for a dress, and what sort of dress to go for. I'm African-American with black hair and dark brown eyes, petite-ish, average bust, small waist, athletic legs sort of. Any advice, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Depends, are you "light-skinned", dark or med? - I am white, but I have lots of aa friends, I think a hot pink hue looks awesome on a friend of mine, she is pretty dark complected. Another friend of mine that is mixed, so she is pretty light skinned, she looks great in greens, even lime greens. Hope that helps! Uhhh...that is a very general skin color. There are tons of different shades. I would say light pinks or light blues.
