I am also African American but my grandparents are also mixed with Indian and white so I have a good grade of curly hair as long as the curling irons are ceramic and your hair is not badly damaged already you should be okay but dont use them to much about once or twice a week at the most because to much heat is bad for your hair period so dont overdo it but if you have hair like mine it will probaly just curl up and sweat out anyway but in the winter time it should last you also if you have a perm really dont overdo it because I use it a little more because I have natural hair

ALWAYS USE CERAMIC! no matter how cheap it is, silver plated irons will damage your hair and it wont look as good.

it's best to use irons with ceramic plates. they cause the least damage to your hair.
