I'm an African American and I want to know if there's any way to help my hair grow longer??
Please ignore that BS about Sally's having a section for African Americans *rolls eyes*
To grow hair:
I'm assuming you have RELAXED hair. Relaxed hair is almost always damaged, especially if you relax it monthly. First of all, keep your hair moisturized. This is as simple as wetting it in the shower, or wetting your hands and running them through your hair. DO NOT buy any moisturizer that has MINERAL OIL or PETROLATUM! care free curl gold and s-curl are popular moisturizers. Do NOT use that Pink lotion!
2)use a wide tooth comb(once a day or less)to avoid hairs breaking.
3)Wash your hair at least once a week with shampoo. I wash mine with JUST conditioner sometimes too.
4)after shampooing, DEEP CONDITION by putting conditioner on your hair and putting a plastic cap over it and leaving it on for 15-30 minutes
5)massage your scalp daily
6)do not put any oils or "grease" on your scalp. Same goes with hair just for the sake of oiling your hair. Their are however topical treatments that you can put on your scalp if they contain something like Indian herbs or sulfur.
7)Try to relax your hair less. Every 8-10 weeks or longer! (i've done it- it's possible)
8)You know your hair is breaking because if you look on the ends you will not see a white bulb. If you DO see a withe thing on the end, that is just shed hair. You shed several hairs a day, so it's all good. If it IS broken hair and you are getting a lot of it frequently, do a protein treatment (use Organic Roots Stimulator mayonaisse or Aphogee 2 minute)
9)Try to put your hair up. Or protect your hair by leaving it in braids. DO NOT LEAVE BRAIDS IN TOO LONG or you will loose your hairline! growafrohairlong.com has a great regime for braids
10)Do not limit your hair care products to the "ethnic" section of walmart. A lot of that stuff is crappy.

your hair is growing, you're just not retaining length. at the length your hair is now it can brush against alot of things causing breakage which makes it seem that your hair isn't growing. you should wear protective hairstyles, that keep your hair off of your shoulders %26amp; and the collars to your clothing. pay more attention to the ends of your hair because it is the oldest part.

If you go to Sally Beauty Supply stores, they have a whole section dedicated to African American hair. Their prices are good and their products are salon quality. Now, please remember that some people just have trouble growing their hair long reguardless of what kind of hair they have. Adding jello (actually it is the gelitin that is good for you) to your diet will help your hair and nails grow longer and stronger. Make sure that your hair is properly conditioned, and maybe consider a hot oil treatment. Your results will vary depending on the current state of your hair. If you have used a relaxer or dye in your hair it is not as healthy as it could be. If you have some dead ends, have your hair trimmed as the dead ends prevent your hair from growing. This is about all the advise I can give you because I can not see or feel your hair... but adding gelitin to anyones diet is going to help their hair. Good Luck!

Hair grows ~0.5 inch per month. The best way to make your hair grow past your shoulders is to make sure you don't have to cut or trim it off what grows because of split ends/damage. Some tips:
- Apply a little bit of moisturizer to your ends daily. This could be a leave-in conditioner, hair lotion, etc. Keeps it from getting dry.
- Deep condition your hair for at least 15 minutes with heat if possible at each wash. Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Pak is a cheap conditioner you can try. If you want a salon quality one try brands like Joico, Kenra, Keracare, Paul Mitchell, etc.
- Limit heat usage. Only use blowdryer, flat iron, curling iron on clean hair.
I'm not an expert but I hope this helps. Good luck. :)
Edit: Donna's advice is good, too. I do the same.

Rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar and sage tea helps in hair growth. Boil rosemary leaves in water and use this water while washing your hair daily to improve hair growth. Try http://solutionsforhairgrowth.blogspot.c... for more details.

hair is protein, a diet that is too low in protein may cause some thinning in hair or a retardation in the growth cycle. If you eat a protein-rich diet it will often result in improved hair growth. To Know more about your hair http://tipsfromruby-hairgrow.blogspot.co... will help you.
